The Loyal Handyman General Contracting Celebrates 20 Years

This month marks the 20th anniversary of The Loyal Handyman General Contracting, founded by Tim Horsch in his hometown of Michigan Center, Michigan in March, 1997.  The company has grown from a single, one-man operation to a well-respected general contracting firm responsible for hundreds of construction projects all throughout the United States, but primarily in Southern Lower Michigan.

Tim began the firm after a career in construction and construction management working for other firms.  “I started my own company because my goals and dreams were being restricted by working for someone else.  I am creative and good at what I do and I wanted to exercise more control in my professional environment.” said Horsch.

With just one employee, the firm started working on smaller projects and grew in staff, scope and project size relatively quickly.  “Our success is due to our integrity…doing what I say I’m going to do.  I am proud of the great relationships I’ve built over the years, with clients, sub-contractors, suppliers and friends,” Horsch said.  “Every project is team building and cementing relationships.  I tend to make friendships with clients.  My work is permanently remodeling someone’s environment and lifestyle.  It tends to be an emotional experience.”

Tim Horsch says his approach to a project is unique.  “I do every project as if its my own.  I want the client to be as proud of the finished result as I am.  Our work ends up looking as if it has always been there…blending in seamlessly with existing space.  I include the client in the process and that builds trust.” he said.  “No one can say at the end of the project, “you know, we didn’t talk about that” because the mutual expectations are very clear throughout the process.”

The name Horsch chose for his firm, “The Loyal Handyman General Contracting”, has drawn a variety of comments over the years.  “My Dad (Gerry Horsch) came up with the idea for the name.  It communicates the fact that we do everything and Dad felt the word Loyal was an important part of the company name.” he said.  “We look at the name “Loyal Handyman” as an adjective rather than a definition.  We think it communicates trust and personal attention.”

Tim’s father Gerry Horsch has been an important ingredient in the success of the company over the years.  “My Dad raised me to understand the value of hard work.  He taught by example, working hard and never complaining.  He also taught me that your name and your word are synonymous.  I credit my success to my Dad and my God-given abilities.” said Horsch.

The Loyal Handyman General Contracting’s projects have ranged from hundreds of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Kitchen, bath, living room and home remodels, additions, whole house construction, offices, commercial buildings, historic renovations and everything in between.  The Loyal Handyman General Contracting’s projects often include original design, custom features and detailed woodwork and craftsmanship.

When asked what project or projects he is most proud of, he responded, “All of them!  My business is improving lives.  Every job has a story and I am always excited to play a role in helping my clients get the most out of their environment.”  One project he pointed out was a total farmhouse restoration east of Marshall.  “This was originally built as a roadhouse in the 1800’s.  We recreated original timber beams, intricate mouldings and custom features like windows, doors and trim.  What we were able to do to that house, make it look brand new yet retain its history, made me very proud.”

With 36 years in his profession, and the last 20 operating his own firm, Tim Horsch also devotes time to

his family and community.  He is a doting father (a daughter) and grandfather of three.  He enjoys every minute he can with family, sharing his home and his pursuit of many outdoor activities and hobbies.  Tim includes one special family member as VP of Sales and Marketing, Tucker, an 8 1/2 year old English Lab. “He gets his nickname “Bug” from being a people dog, always wanting attention and “supervising” jobs.” said Horsch.

Tim Horsch grew up in Michigan Center, Michigan, graduating from Michigan Center High School in 1983.  He has devoted much of his personal time to helping the Michigan Center community.  As a member of the Michigan Center Lions Club, Tim chaired the Carp Carnival for 15 years, and served on various township boards and committees.  He was known as “The Mayor of Michigan Center” during his Carp Carnival years for his fervent promotion and dedication to the event and the community.  Among the charities he and the company have supported, the Children’s Miracle Network

As Tim Horsch reaches this twenty year milestone, where does he see the company going in the future?  “My son-in-law, Carl Nelson has been with the company for the past four years and he will continue to help grow the company.  I love what I do and I hope to keep at it for several more years.” he said.

“We’re blessed with all the great clients we’ve worked with and look forward to meeting new friends.” said

Looking back, Tim feels even more strongly that The Loyal Handyman General Contracting was the perfect name for the company.  Tim said, “Loyalty is devotion and faithfulness.  I live up to that name every day and am proud and humbled for the ability to do so.”
